Arkansas State Opens D-1 with Big Win

Scoring early and often Arkansas State opens a new era in division one rugby with a resounding 79-8 win over the University of South Carolina.  Within two minutes of the opening kick Clint Whittler scored under the post.  In quick succession Curtis Huckaby, Roland Evans, Danie Swanepoel, Darrin Oliver, Jacob Grubbs and Aaron Church scored first half tries.  The half time score was 43-3.

The second half continued to see ASU score as David Caswell started the barage of points with a penalty kick followed by tries from Swanepoel, Ben Naiveli, Blake White, Evans and Ryan Adkins.  Huckaby was 4 for 5 in conversions and Caswell was 4 for 8 in conversions and 1 for 1 on penalty kicks.

Solid defense and aggressive offense was the pattern throughout the day.  South Carolina managed to score their lone try 70 minutes into the game when a lazy ASU defense allowed a quick tap and kick to be grounded in the try zone.  Next up for ASU is a trip to Athens, Georgia next Saturday to play the University of Georgia Bulldogs.
